Tide Camp Gets Underway
Jan 18, 2010
Yonkers, New York --
The mission objective isn't painted anywhere on the walls at De Witt Clinton. It really doesn't need to be. The players can do the math on their own. It has been three years since the RipTide went for a championship, but Peter Wermuth's team is ready to put an end to its championship drought in 2010. It all began on Saturday, as 33 players reported to De Witt Clinton and officially kicked off Spring Training.
"It was a good beginning," said team Manager Peter Wermuth. "I really liked the outcome."
Workouts began a little slower than expected as there was some confusion as to weather the team would take advantage of the unusually warm January weather and work out on the turf or indoors. Ultimately, the decision was to workout indoors and once underway the facility resembled the well oiled machine that is Peter Wermuth’s baseball factory.
While there were some notable faces missing from this first day of camp due to College obligations and a few excused absences, much of the core remains constant from how the club last took to the field.
The report of ace right-handlers Dan Litt, and a Jose Aquino, as wll as the promotion of Owen Kimmel will be among the most popular stories coming out of this year’s rotation. However, all eyes were on Managing director and assistant coach Jonathan Zeron, who returned to the field for the first time since experiencing a critical eye injury which sidelined him for 6 weeks from a pitched ball during the first workout of last season. “I’m really glad to still be able to come out here and do this” said Zeron. “To say I’m just a little edgy would be putting it politely. But I received some great support from my coaches and players. I’ve also learned to have eyes in the back of my head.”
The team has yet to see the off season progress made by left-hander Jonathan Aponte, who is coming off shoulder surgery and to hear the final decision of Center Fielder Gabriel Garcia, who has been undecided in his return for another season in Columbia blue.
Though there will be many new faces Manager Peter Wermuth expects to bring it all together for a great 2010 season.
New York's first exhibition game is expected to take place on March 7th, and they open the season on Sunday, April 4th at 1:05PM.
